Serving alcohol to minors at Christmas? What are the rules?
Moving into the silly season everyone wants to let their hair down and have a bit of fun. And that often involves alcohol.
We often want to share that good cheer with our underaged family and friends. But did you know there are tough new restrictions about how alcohol can be supplied to minors in Victoria?
Our Responsible Service of Alcohol
trainer, Tammie, shares some of the new restrictions on adults and on licenced premises.
- From September the service of alcohol to a minor at a licenced premises is not permitted under any circumstance. That means no swig of champagne or glass of beer over Christmas lunch with a parent or guardian at the local bistro.
- At a private residence supply of alcohol to minors has been further restricted. An adult/guardian can only supply alcohol if that adult/guardian can demonstrate reasonable supervision of that supply of liquor. For example, an adult/guardian cannot provide alcohol to a party where there are minors and then leave to go to the movies.
- Alcohol must not unknowingly be delivered to any person who has not requested it. “Spiking” one’s drink involves introducing unwanted or extra alcohol into their drink without their knowledge. For example ordering an extra shot of vodka. Most venues have a policy about the number of standard drinks they will serve in any one glass. However be aware that drink spiking is a criminal offence that carries a jail term.
