
Kickstart Your Career – Working in disability services
Thinking of working in the disability sector? The jobs are out there waiting.
Kickstart Your Career improves your “employability” by helping you discover your skills, talents and interests. Whether you are looking for your first job, changing your current job, or returning to work after a break this course gives you the tools, confidence and skills to follow your career goals.
This hands on introductory course prepares people to work in the sector by introducing them to, and encouraging a person-centred approach. It is important that those considering a career in disability services understand the goals and mission of the sector and have an awareness of the challenges and benefits to ensure it is a good fit for them.
All participants are required to undertake a volunteer placement with our partner employer during the course and participate in a real job interview with our partner employer upon successful completion of the course.

- Roles and responsibilities
- Guiding principles
- Safe and fair work practices
- The rewards and challenges of working with people with special needs

Pre-requisites
All students must:
- Demonstrate skills at a minimum Australian Core Skills Framework ACSF Level 2 (approximately year 9) in all core skill areas.
- Students should have the physical capacity to do tasks that may involve lifting and walking/standing for long periods of time.
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age to participate in this program.
- Hold a valid Police Record check (no older than 12 months).
- Agree to complete First Aid training within the first six months of employment.
Students entering the Community Services sector should seek medical advice regarding Hepatitis B immunisation.
Who is it for?
Open to anyone who wants to explore the employment opportunities available in the sector.
Pathways
May lead you directly into a job or to further study.
All participants will undertake practical placement and a real job interview with our industry partner MiLife.
Duration
Course length is 100 hours delivered 9:30am – 3pm 2 days per week for 8 weeks.

Course is delivered in a mix of classroom based, industry visits and industry placement.
Fees & Charges
This course is subsidised by the Victorian Government through Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE). Full delivery fee is $85.00 Concession fee (for eligible participants) is $17.00
