This course will assist candidates to gain the knowledge and skills to undertake entry level roles within the parks and gardens environment.
This qualification is delivered through an Australian Traineeship.
The Certificate II in Parks and Gardens is designed to provide candidates with a range of skills and knowledge to work in a park or garden maintenance environment.
Units may be selected to suit a variety of roles and positions within the Horticultural industry and individual employer and employment requirements.
Course Outline

- AHCIRG217 Assist with pressurised irrigation systems
- AHCPGD201 Plant trees and shrubs
- AHCPCM201 Recognise plants
- AHCSOL202 Assist with soil or growing media sampling and testing
- AHCTRF204 Support turf establishment
- AHCPGD203 Prune shrubs and small trees
- AHCCHM201 Apply chemicals under supervision
- AHCMOM203 Operate basic machinery and equipment
- AHCPMG201 Treat weeds

Who is it for?
This course is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to undertake roles in a Parks and Gardens or general garden maintenance role.
Candidates undertaking this qualification may meet one or more of the following requirements:
- Male and female, predominately under 21 years of age with a general interest in horticulture and/or garden maintenance.
- May suit an individual who has a disability and commencing their career in the horticulture/garden maintenance sector.
Pre-requisites
There are no educational or pre-requisite entry requirements for this qualification, however candidates undertaking this qualification must meet the following requirements:
- Be employed in this field with a registered employer;
- Entered into a formal training contract with the employer, trainee and the Australian Apprenticeship Support Network provider;
- Complete a foundation skills assessment and demonstrate the required skills in the areas of learning, oral communication, reading, writing and numeracy;
- Basic computer and internet skills;
- Have the physical capabilities to lift, dig and walk/stand for long periods of time;
- Withstand a variety of climatic conditions such as cold, heat, wind and rain.
Pathways
The following employment pathways are available to students who complete this qualification:
- Assistant gardener or horticulturalist in parks and gardens
- General garden maintenance
- Assistant groundsperson

Duration
Trainees who are employed on a full time basis have a maximum of 12 months to complete training. Trainees who are employed on a part-time basis have a maximum of 24 months to complete training.
As this qualification (Certificate II level) is being delivered as a workplace based traineeship, standard delivery timeframes are likely to extend up to the recommended 12 months of the training agreement. The qualification is ‘competency based’ with delivery being ‘on the job training’ which means that the learner is assessed when they are competent.
The timeframe may be shortened depending on the learner’s experience and skills which can go towards recognition of prior learning (RPL).
Delivery mode
The program has been developed for workplace based delivery which incorporates practical instruction from a nominated workplace coach, supplemented with theory and practical training/assessment conducted by an Advance trainer/assessor.
- Full time trainees will be withdrawn from routine work duties for a minimum of one and a half hours per week (averaged over a four week cycle) to complete structured training/learning activities.
- A nominated workplace coach will provide guidance, instruction, feedback and opportunities to learn all aspects of tasks relating to horticulture and gardening, as set out in the training plan.
- An Advance trainer/assessor will visit the trainee at least once per month to facilitate training and assessment activities. These visits will be negotiated with the employer.

Locations
The location of training for this program will be in the workplace of your employer.
Predominately, Advance will service the South, South East and Mornington Peninsula regions.
Advance trainer/assessors will come to your work location, as predetermined with your employer.
